5 MAJOR WAYS THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS SHIFTED IN THE PAST DECADE

The chaotic and ever-changing fashion industry has withstood some major culture shifts within the past 10 years. It’s crazy to think that ideas and trends that were once greatly frowned upon, have become the most celebrated and glamourized, & vice versa.

As an active fashion creative, sometimes, I like to just take a moment to observe the industry that I’m in from a more objective standpoint to adjust and adapt my methods accordingly. While pondering the topic recently, I realized that while change is to be expected (it’s what keeps the fashion industry going), we’ve witnessed some huge culture-shifting patterns among creators & consumers alike that may never be reversed; some for the better, and some for the worse. Here are a few of the ways the world of fashion just may be forever changed…

STYLE & CHARACTER OVER QUALITY

Gone are the days where one must be draped in luxury from head to toe in order to be looked at as a style authority. As I stated in my blog post on “The Evolution of the Handbag”, we can now find our fave celeb stylistas unapologetically flaunting a look for less from a fast-fashion retailer.

While the luxury market is still booming, it is a lot more common now to find a mix of high and low fashion within someone’s outfit choice. In fact, due to the nature of social media, & how we document what we’re wearing through frequent selfies & #OOTD posts, you’ll find that many of us care less about whether our favorite ankle booties are made from genuine or faux leather, and more about the boldness of color, print, or overall shock value.

EMBRACING LOWER QUALITY FABRICATION

“Is that polyester? No, thank you.” - said no millenial ever. This one goes hand in hand with the change above. While poly blends and synthetic fabrics were once a thing that almost every fashion lover of a certain tax bracket aimed to avoid, we can now see people being less afraid to mix it up when it comes to the materials their clothing is made of.

Don’t get me wrong, while there are some who still demand their blouse is made of pure silk or linen (some have allergies to certain materials and some simply only want genuine fabrics in their closet), the younger generation is often more concerned with how much it costs and how many ways they can layer or restyle it to increase wear value. When’s the last time you’ve caught someone complaining that their favorite shirt isn’t made of 100% cotton?

CONSUMERS HOLDING BRANDS ACCOUNTABLE FOR SHOWCASING DIVERSE TYPES OF BEAUTY

tumblr_nmpmr5inB61r35scto1_250.jpg

This has been the most prominent and obvious change yet. Remember when season after season, a designer could fill a runway with 50+ models, none of them being Black, Asian, Hispanic, or of any other minority group, and no one would say anything about it? Well, fortunately, that time is over. Many are speaking up, and revoking their brand loyalty when they see no change.

Consumers have longed for decades to have the ads and promotional content that are targeting them, feature people who look, well, like them.. This demand from consumers extends beyond race and includes size & gender and while many brands have unfortunately responded by offering us one “token black girl” or one plus-size model every few seasons,it has been refreshing and rewarding to watch a versatile range of looks being pushed to the forefront, even if we had to disrupt tradition to see it.

KNOCKOFFS TRICKLING UP

tumblr_mt612yJ9Co1rk0zs4o1_500.jpg

There was a time when if you spotted a popular design, you instantly knew which designer house conceived the item first, and what lower end brand was knocking it off. However, with today’s streetwear and couture worlds constantly intertwining, as well as consumers following a mix of well-known brands and smaller owned start ups, it’s becoming almost impossible to always know who is copying who. One thing we do know though, is that knockoffs now go both ways. Countless major fashion corporations have been called out for knocking off some of the most innovative and resourceful independent designers.

Unfortuanately, many major brands are able to get away with stealing the designs of independent designers. The main reasons for this include micro brands and startups not affording a team in their budget to take proper legal action, as well as bigger brands having the ability to produce a design and bring it to market quicker than an independent designer could, due to their ownership of factories and larger staff.

THOSE WHO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES OF FASHION BEING PUSHED TO THE FOREFRONT

When I first began to pursue styling, I enjoyed the concept of being lowkey, and working exclusively  behind the scenes to bring a vision to life. As the industry has shifted, I’ve been pushed to acknowledge that I will sometimes be the face and voice (check out my podcast here) of my own brand.

While there was once a time when our fave style icons remained a well-kept secret and we barely knew the names and faces of who dressed who, social media has opened the door and allowed us to discover, celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of image consultants, makeup artists, and creative directors more out in the open. Many of the public figures we look up to have no problem tagging the team who helped put them together for an event, or day to day activities. In fact, it’s almost always expected.

Which major shift most impacts your life as it relates to fashion? Let me know in the comments!

So, this past weekend, I attended the well-anticipated Convos With Claire fashion networking mixer. I’m pretty sure most know who trailblazing fashion media maven Claire Sulmers is (especially if you follow posts on here because she’s my role model) , but for those of you who don’t know, Claire is the founder and editor in Chief of Fashion Bomb Daily, one of the world’s most influential fashion websites. She also maintains her own lifestyle blog called The Bomb Life, while serving as an influencer and brand ambassador for the likes of Verizon, Martini & Rossi, and more.

I finally met Claire during fashion week back in September, so I was definitely excited to link with her again! At her mixers, Claire is known for bringing together the stylish and ambitious discuss various topics in fashion and business with some of the industry’s best. For this particular event, Claire brought out a star studded panel to drop gems on us, at the Flat NYC on 24th Street. Panelists included Celebrity Stylist, Designer, Instructor, and Global Creative Partner of MCM, Misa Hylton, Television Personality & Entrepreneur Bevy Smith, and Designer and Furrier to your celeb faves, Duckie Confetti. The event’s theme was animal print.

Starting with a BOMB VIP Brunch and red carpet welcome featuring DJ JFK, the atmosphere was intriguing and inviting as fashion creatives settled in to vibe and shop. Claire typically uses her events to bring awareness to dope brands that many may not be familiar with already. Vendors included: Black Tag ApparelMess in a BottleNroda SunglassesRed Eye Luxe, Boutte Rouge BoutiqueYvonne JewnellLaMonique Cosmetics, and Vanity Storm.

I instantly connected with a few fellow bloggers as we helped each other flick it up while bouncing our creative ideas off of each other. Not long after, the panel began as my photographer arrived to help me get content. I literally gained so much knowledge and insight but a few of my main takeaways included…

“MAKE STRATEGIC MOVES WITHIN YOUR BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS THAT WILL LATER ON BE PROFITABLE IN THE LONG TERM” -via DUCKIE CONFETTI

Talking about doing “work for free”, so to speak, is often a topic that is considered almost taboo in the fashion industry. As fashionistas questioned what type of “free” work was the right move, Duckie gave insight on how he strategizes when it comes to this. He shared how he gave Meek Mill’s stylist a leopard sleeve hoodie free of charge, knowing that seeing the very well known rapper in his merch would influence people to shop (he was right, this one move alone made him 6 figures). He stressed to us the importance of making sacrifices for your brand that will likely have a high upside, financially.

“THE STRUGGLE IS GOOD FOR YOU, IT GIVES YOU CONFIDENCE, SUBSTANCE & GRIT!”- via BEVY SMITH

Though Bevy is now a very well established professional, she shared how there was a 7 year era where she would have to “go out and hunt and kill” for work. She stressed how though this was one of the most difficult times of her life, it was the time in her life that built her character the most. Bevy encouraged those on the quest to manifest big dreams to not be in the rush for “success” or “stardom” and to embrace their current struggles because quite often the struggle itself is what’s propelling you toward the life you dream about.

“YOUR VISION IS CLEAR, NOW JUST CONTINUE TO EXECUTE” - via MISA HYLTON

Upon me asking iconic stylist Misa Hylton what moves I should make to continuously set me apart in my craft, she asked what makes me unique. Once I told her how it’s my passion for who my clients truly are and using that to create looks that speak to their highest self, she reassured me how clear my individuality already is.

Misa shared how it took her a while to gain confidence as a stylist being that she first got into the business with her then boyfriend. But it took for her to keep going after they ended to really recognize who she was and what she wanted to achieve as a stylist. She let me know that from here on out, its all about using the knowledge I gain from each experience to move forward and do what works for me because the path for everyone is not the same.

“KEEP GOING, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU’RE POSITIVELY INFLUENCING “ - via CLAIRE SULMERS

While sharing with us how she felt so close to giving up lately due to the challenges that Fashion Bomb Daily had been facing as a business, she simply didn’t. She got emotional looking at the AMAZING turn out of the event, saying that was just what she needed to reassure her that she was doing something right. She inspired us to keep going because we never know who we’re motivating and influencing. The mixer’s turn out was living proof of that!

IMG_0017.JPG

After a little more networking and connecting, I left the event SO ready to execute on the new insight. It’s crazy because this past week, I hadn’t been feeling well at all. A couple days before leaving for the event, I came down with the worst cold I’ve had in a while so I was feeling so drained. Honestly, as excited as I was for the meet up, the last thing I felt like doing was going out. But this weekend definitely taught me that you never know what blessings and great opportunities you give up when you only focus on what you feel like doing.

I wanna encourage you to also push past your comfort zone, even when you may not feel like it. Take time to invest in your craft and don’t be afraid to seek out experiences that will contribute to your growth!

 WHERE DO I START???

Honestly, it doesn't matter. You just have to start. As far as styling editorial shoots, I started with some cute clothes my mom wore in the 80's and 90's and a few furs I inherited from my great grandmothers-- a very humble beginning. But the truth is that if you wait until you have all of the right contacts, the best boutiques to pull from (in this case), and all of the money, knowledge, and resources you need for your ideal career to start, you will NEVER start because you will never be able to attain these things until... you start. So whether it's going to school to study your field, dressing your friends and taking photos of them, or creating some business cards as motivation, just do it.

Stay tuned for the next Industry Insight post, coming very soon. 💋💋

Sharra,

"The definition of walking art."
